Rostrum Medical Innovations Presents Results of VQm® System’s Clinical Validation at the American Society of Anesthesiologists
December 7, 2022 - Vancouver, BC
Rostrum Medical Innovations is pleased to announce the results from its ongoing clinical validations were presented at this year’s American Society of Anesthesiologists congress in New Orleans by Dr. (Prof) Neal Fleming.
A study on mechanically ventilated adult patients was conducted by Dr. (Prof) Neal Fleming to evaluate the VQm® System’s near real time measurements of functional residual capacity (FRC) and physiological dead space (VDphys) against clinical gold standards. FRC and physiological dead space (VDphys) can provide valuable insights to guide optimization of lung-protective ventilatory settings in individual patients.
The study indicated good agreement between paired dead space (VD) measurements using the VQm® System and the reference value. The mean difference in the paired VD values was 0.01 L (Figure 1A), demonstrating minor difference in the values. The study also indicated good trending between the two paired measurements (measurements obtained using VQm® System and reference FRC [standard nitrogen washout]). The mean difference in the paired FRC values was 0.72 L (Figure 1B), and substantial concordance reflecting comparable trending ability (Figure 1C).
This data builds on earlier reported results, and demonstrate that the VQm® System can provide near real-time physiological insights into the effects of changes in lung mechanics during the management of mechanically ventilated patients.

About VQm® System
The VQm® System is a novel monitoring device that aims to provide clinicians with near real-time physiological insight into the effects of changes in lung mechanics of mechanically ventilated patients. The VQm® System was developed with the intention to assist physicians in their management of mechanical ventilation by providing measurements of the following physiological parameters: Shunt Index (Qsi), Dead space (VD), Pulmonary Blood Flow (PBF), and Functional Residual Capacity (FRC). The VQm® System is Health Canada approved.
