Near real-time data at bedside.
The VQm® delivers near-real time data at the patient’s bedside, directly to the clinician.
How it works
At user selected intervals, the VQm® administers low levels of either CO₂ or N₂O to the patient. Using our patented Sequential Gas Delivery algorithm and well-known capnography principles, modified for our application, we are able to derive Pulmonary Blood Flow, Functional Residual Capacity, Airway Dead Space, Physiologic Dead Space, and Shunt Index.

VQm® Parameters
The VQm® measures four critical parameters, available at the bedside.
-
The volume of blood per minute which is participating in gas exchange (L/min). PBF, when combined with shunt fraction, is the overall cardiac output of a patient. These measurements show the effect of changing intra-thoracic pressures on heart function and effectiveness of ventilator management.
-
The volume of air remaining in the lungs at the end of normal expiration (L). Changes in FRC can signal progression of ARDS and effectiveness of ventilator management.
-
An indication of the fraction of total blood flowing through the lungs which does not participate in gas exchange. Shunt fraction is increased in ARDS. Effective changes in ventilator settings (e.g. PEEP) improve the matching of ventilation and pulmonary blood flow, resulting in a decreased shunt fraction.
-
The volume of inspired air which does not participate in gas exchange (reported as % of tidal volume, or in L). Dead space is also increased in ARDS, particularly if ventilator settings are causing overdistention of alveoli. Effective changes in ventilator settings (e.g. PEEP) can reduce VILI events & improve ventilation/perfusion matching.
